9/19/02 - Dragons coast to City League win - The Allderdice boys' and girls' teams won their second straight City League meets with easy victories on a sweltering day at the Oval. The boys, led by senior Ron Warnock and sophomore Joey Rosenberg, scored 1-2-5-6-8 for a total of 22 points. The girls took places 4 through 8 to score 30 points, also well ahead of their nearest competition. Thanks to senior Greg Herschlag and his family for hosting last night's pasta party. All runners should be at Allderdice at 8:30a Saturday for the Allegheny Classic.

9/17/02 - here will be a pasta party tomorrow (Wendesday night) at 6:30 at Greg Herschlag's house. Please bring some type of food (pasta, bread, paperware, cookies, or soft drinks, but no sauce, we have plenty!). Remember that the usual rules of team conduct apply at these pasta parties. Also, Coach Flynn recommends this article about high school cross country.

9/14/02 - Girls 6th at Spartan Invite - Ainsman 10th, Kerpedjieva 30th in varsity; Knezevich 2nd in JV - The Allderdice girls captured 6th place, a single point behind AAA powerhouse Mt. Lebanon, in today's Spartan Invitational in Boardman, Ohio. Leading the Dragons were senior Molly Ainsman and freshman Sassi Kerpedjieva, who cruised to a 30th place finish while setting a personal best. Sophomore Lara Nagle, juniors Torrie Caruso and Casey Rubenstein, senior Erica Pasciullo, and freshman Clara Finley also ran strong races for the varsity girls.

In the enormous boys varisty race (300 very fast runners), senior Ron Warnock came in 69th, followed by juniors Charley Monroe and Alex Wein, senior Matthew Meisel, and freshman Mike Gross, who was running in his first varsity race. The boys, still undermanned from injuries, placed a respectable 31st of 44 teams.

In junior varsity competition, freshman Lili Knezevich (above) placed second behind Mt. Lebanon frontrunner (and Fairview champ) Lauren Wood, who missed the varsity race. Freshman Julia Meisel also finished among the top 100 JV runners. Freshman Jordan Haber led the boys junior varsity, with sophomore Will Hackney and senior Dave Reznick in tow.

Due to Yom Kippur, there will be no practice (or school) on Monday. The Dragons race against City League competition on Thurdsday and travel to Allegheny College on Saturday.

In other City League news, Schenley and Carrick compete in the Slippery Rock Invitational today. Results at PennTrackXC.com courtesy of RunHigh.com.

9/12/02 - Girls, Boys capture first City meet - Racing on consecutive days is never easy, nor is racing when the temps are in the high 70s. Still, the Dragons easily captured the first City League meet of the season, with junior Lara Nagle and senior Ron Warnock leading the Dragons for the second straight day. The pack of Nagle, junior Erica Pasciullo, and freshmen Sassi Kerpedkieva and Clara Finley took 2nd through 5th places to easily outdistance their nearest competitor, Schenley. With Warnock and junior Charley Monroe leading, the boys, too, outdistanced Schenley, placing 1-2-5-8-9 in a 25-34 win. Junior Alex Wein moved from 12th to 5th place in the last mile, and junior Matei Sarbu came from deep in the pack to finish 8th in 20:16. The Dragons will travel to Boardman, Ohio, this Saturday for the Spartan Invitational. Thanks to senior David Droz and his family for hosting tonight's pasta party.

The Dragons will race at the Oval tomorrow at the first City League meet of the season.

9/04/02 - Saturday's meet at California University of Pa. has been cancelled due to construction on the California campus. Practice this week will continue as scheduled.

9/02/02 - Thanks to Fairview coach Dennis Muller for photos from the Fairview Invitational.

9/01/02 - There is no practice scheduled for today (Sunday) or tomorrow (Monday), but all runners should run 7 miles either day and email Coach Flynn after doing so. Starting Tuesday, practices will meet in the swimming pool immediately after school.

8/26/02 - Welcome back to all runners who were on the Deep Creek trip, and thanks to the runners who continued to run in the interim. Some fun facts about our week in Deep Creek...

  • We ran over 65 miles.
  • We took over 200 showers.
  • We did over 15 very full, very dirty loads of laundry.
  • We consumed 5 pounds of butter, 10 gallons of cookie dough (mostly raw), 15 gallons of milk, 20 gallons of sports drinks, 144 pop tarts, and 500 pancakes.
  • We made over 100 references to cows (thanks, Tom and Joe).
  • We made over 200 references to rolling stones (thanks, Flo and Scott).
  • No one missed a single practice due to injury!

11/22/01 - Juniors Edwin Uber and Matthew Meisel win, respectively, the 2 mile and 4 mile races of the Harry C. Holland Gutbuster in Frick Park. The annual race is run on the extremely hill trails of the park (the first and third miles each rise 300 feet), so their times (14:34 and 29:08) are relatively modest. This is the second straight year Allderdice has swept these two races; Nick Jarvik ('01) and Ethan McKenney ('01) won the races last year. FULL RESULTS...

11/03/01 - Senior Ian Wolfson finishes his Allderdice cross country career with a 21st place finish at the PIAA State Championships in Hershey. Other top 100 finishers are junior Molly Ainsman (41st) and sophomore Tom Jech (78th). Other senior finishes: Tina Karan (147th), Eric Silverman (193rd), Julia Nagle (225th), and Jay Firestone (232nd). The boys and girls teams took 18th and 19th place respectively on the excessively hilly Hersheypark course. FULL RESULTS...

11/01/01 - With PIAA State Championships this Saturday, November 3, the varsity has tapered their workouts and is finally ready. They will compete against the very best runners from every corner of Pennsylvania, including the Council Rock girls and the Cedar Cliff boys.

10/30/01 - News from, of all places, Minnesota, where we have learned of race results for ex-Allderdice runner sophomore Ben Schuster. Schuster, who moved to a Minneapolis suburb over the summer, ran a 21:23 in the Shakopee Invite October 16. Way to go, Benji!

10/27/01 - In preparation for the state championships on November 3, the varsity ran the annual two man-10 mile competition today, which was shortened to 7.5 miles because Coach Flynn thought 10 would be slightly excessive. Seniors Ian Wolfson and Sam Ennis won the boys race, and for the second straight year senior Tina Karan and sophomore Casey Rubenstein won the girls. Each won a tee-shirt, a fistful of Powerbars, and Coach Flynn's undying respect (wink wink).

10/25/01 - WPIAL (PIAA district 7) championships were held today at Slippery Rock. As Allderdice has competed against WPIAL teams the whole season, the results are of some interest. Boys AAA: 1) Dan Mazocco, Baldwin, 2) Sam Bair, Shaler, 3) Shawn Cavanaugh, Mt. Lebo. Girls AAA: 1) Lauren Bricker, Hempfield, 2) Stephanie Madia, No. Allegheny, 3) Jessica Perry, Peters Twp. Full results at runhigh.com.

10/20/01 - Senior Ian Wolfson and junior Molly Ainsman won their second consecutive City League titles today as Allderdice dominated the team standings for the third consecutive year. The Allderdice boys defeated Schenley, 20-38, and the girls were the only school to finish a team of five runners. Both varsities will compete in the PIAA state championships November 3. ARTICLE AND FULL RESULTS...

10/15/01 - Get ready for City Championships! Runners need to be at the oval at 7 am on Saturday morning (get a good night's sleep!). Race times are as follows: junior varsity boys and girls, 9:00 am; girls varsity, 9:45 am; boys varsity, 10:30 am. The awards ceremony will be held soon after the end of the last race. Come out and cheer for Dice as they make their run towards the state championships!

10/13/01 - Temperatures are unseasonably warm at the Glory Days Grill Invitational in Manassas, Virginia, but the Dragons do not disappoint. Senior Ian Wolfson runs another presonal best (16:13) and places sixth, and sophomore Charley Monroe drops nearly a minute off his best time to run 18:00. Junior Molly Ainsman runs her best time this season as well (19:23), and freshman Lara Nagle runs a personal best 20:50. Allderdice will now begin to alter its workouts in preparation for City Championships on October 20.

10/11/01 - The City League holds its last weekly meet before championships, and Allderdice, short a few runners and with only a few running all-out, still manages to win their heats. Freshman Joe Rosenberg runs a personal record 19:55, and senior Adanna Scott, after an easy first mile (over 9 minutes) burns the last two for a 25:15.

10/6/01 - With temperatures hovering around 50 degrees and partly sunny skies, this crisp fall day made for perfect running weather at the Central Catholic Invitational. With all the PRs turned in by Allderdice runners, and since state championships are rapidly approaching, Coach Flynn is a little concerned about other coaches knowning too much about our varsity times. So, until further notice, we will post no times. But we can tell you that the junior varsity squads turned in excellent performances, with seniors Johanna Lenkner, Adanna Scott, Emily Dziubek, Peter Kerpedjiev, and Sam Ennis all turning in top-30 finishes. Kerpedjiev's 18:46 is his best performance in nearly two years. Additionally, the JV boys take 3rd place as a team behind powerhouses Butler and North Allegheny. READ MORE...

10/2/01 - A day after one of the year's hardest workouts, the Dragons plodd their way to yet another first place finish in a City League meet. With temperatures pushing 80 degrees, however, they turn out some of the slowest times of the season. Still, the boys manage to nab 11 of the the top 15 places, and the girls finish strong as well.
