Allderdice wins boys, girls City crowns
Wolfson, Ainsman defend titles
by Matthew Meisel
PITTSBURGH, Oct. 20 - Senior Ian Wolfson and junior Molly Ainsman won their second consecutive City League titles today as Allderdice dominated the team standings for the third consecutive year.
The Allderdice boys defeated Schenley, 20-38, and the girls were the only school to finish a team of five runners. Both varsities will compete in the PIAA state championships November 3.
Wolfson, sophomore Tom Jech (17:23), and junior Edwin Uber (17:49) finished 1-2-3 for the Dragons as expected, but Schenley runners Nicholas Aikens (18:06) and Steve Barringer (18:13) snuck into the 4th and 5th positions to qualify for states as individuals. Close behind were seniors Eric Silverman (18:22), Jay Firestone (18:40), sophomore Charley Monroe (18:46), and junior Ron Warnock (18:52).
Chasing Ainsman was Schenley runner Mora Horwitz (20:05), who also qualified for the state championship. The tightly bunched group of sophomore Torrie Caruso (21:10), senior Tina Karan (21:12), and freshman Lara Nagle (21:17) finished 3-4-5. Langley runner Kira Stadler (21:58) rounded out the individual state qualifers. Seniors Julia Nagle an Johanna Lenkner, running in their last City Championship, finished seventh and ninth, and junior Erica Pasciullo was eleventh.
The boys junior varsity was unable to accomplish last year's lofty feat of taking the top twelve places, but they did manage to steal eight of the top ten. Langley freshman Khafre Way went out fast and lead after half a mile, but seniors Sam Ennis and Peter Kerpedjiev soon overtook him. The top eight runners, separated by less than 15 seconds at the mile mark, soon spread out as the race headed into the woods. Ennis, breaking away from the pack, finished in 18:48, half a minute faster than last year's winning time. Junior Marc Stiller moved up to second (19:01) with Kerpedjiev third, Way fourth, and junior Matthew Meisel outkicked sophomore Matei Sarbu for fifth. Junior David Reznick, sophmore Alex Wein, Schenley runner Colin Boyle, and freshman Jake Cox rounded out the top 10.
Senior Adanna Scott, one of the region's elite sprinters, won the girls junior varsity race, and sophomore Casey Rubenstein took second. The race was marred by an unsightly mash of bodies at the start line which left senior Emily Dziubek and sophomore Noor Dughri trampled by spikes and lying on the ground. Dughri and Dziubek, who was running in her fourth JV championship, slowly peeled themselves off the ground and proceeded to run the race anyway, finishing with valiant fourth and third place efforts, respectively. Freshman Lee Michelow, Brashear runner Tiffany Thomas, freshmen Ellie Klionsky, Mila Scorkina, Marni Kostman, and sophomore Sarah McKinney all finished in the top 10.
Wolfson's 16:54 and Ainsman's 19:56 are course records on the City League's new course. Due to sharp turns, changing terrain, and lack of any sustained downhill, the course is slightly slower than was thought it would be, and many of today's times were higher than expected. Still, the course proved to be in very good condition, and it was better marked than it had been at many of the season's other City League meets. Times were also slowed by unseasonably warm temperatures which, although not as hot as those in northern Virginia last week, caused many runners to become slightly dehydrated.
