Wolfson, boys and girls varisty all take second at Uniontown Invite

By Alison Knezevich

UNIONTOWN, Pa., Sept. 22 - Both the boys’ and girls’ varsity teams finished second to Greensburg-Salem at the Uniontown Invitational today. The girls continued their tradition of finishing second at this race, which Allderdice has attended for the past four years. For the boys, this was its best ever finish at this race. Both teams beat Bethel Park.

Senior Ian Wolfson finished second in the boys’ varsity race. Sophomore Tom Jech finished seventh, with junior Edwin Uber right behind him in tenth place. All three boys received trophies for their performances. Seniors Eric Silverman and Jay Firestone also contributed to the team’s standing, finishing 31st and 32nd, respectively.

The boys’ times and places this year reflect the significant improvements they have made since last season. For example, last year one boy finished the Uniontown course in under 17 minutes, one boy finished in under 18 minutes, and the rest finished in over 19 minutes. This year, one finished in under 17 minutes, two finished in under 18 minutes, and the rest of the varsity finished in under 19 minutes. Coach Ed Flynn attributes these improvements to both stronger talent and just plain hard work. "They worked harder this summer," he said, "and came into the year more prepared." Additionally, more boy members mean more competition for the top seven varsity spots.

The girls also placed second after Greensburg-Salem and beat Bethel Park. Junior Molly Ainsman received a trophy for her tenth place finish, while junior Erica Pasciullo, sophomore Torrie Caruso, senior Tina Karan, and freshman Lara Nagle all placed in the top 20. Such strong finishes by underclassmen Caruso and Nagle mean good things for the girls’ team in the next several years.

In the junior varsity races, both the boys and girls made excellent showings. Senior Adanna Scott, known more for her sprinting than her distance running, won the girls’ race, and senior Emily Dziubek finished fourth. Sophomore Noor Dughri, and freshmen Mila Scorkina and Lee Michelow all finished in the top 20. In the boys’ race, sophomore Charley Monroe, senior Peter Kerpedjiev, junior Matthew Meisel, junior Dave Reznick, and freshman Jacob Cox all finished in the top 25. Monroe’s time will most likely win him a varsity spot in the next race.
